Tonight i decided to scan some negs i have, some are quite new as they are from my Bronica S2a, and some were some old 35mm negs from about 15-17 years ago. My big problem is i dont actually have a scanner, but thanks to my tablet and my smartphone i was able to scan them pretty successfully.
How did i do it? i used an app on my tablet, and an app on my phone.
On my Android tablet i have an app called lightbox, and it does exactly that, it uses the backlight on the tablet screen with nothing else to create a modern version of an old school light box, this simply means you can put the negative on the tablet and look at the neg. On my Android powered phone, i have an app called Helmut Film Scanner, this uses the camera on the phone to 'scan' the image, then you can make adjustments, then do a final scan and save the image.
After a little experimentation, i found to get the best results i used 2 soup cans to elevate the negs up off the surface of the tablet to stop the acutal LED's of the backlight being visible through the negs.
As you can see from the above negs, its actually not a bad little setup to use, it means i can scan 120 negs, pretty easily. The neg of the Dunedin Railway station is acutally the first useable frame i took with my Bronica, so im pretty stoked it came up so well.
The negs below are all 35mm frames taken between 1998 and 2004, and were taken on a variety of film stocks from good ol Kodak gold 400 to Acupan 800, the results are not too bad at all, so i think i will have to dig out some more negs and keep scanning.
Helmut & Lightbox apps are available on the Google play store and are even better, both FREE!!!!
The Helmut app is also super compatible with the Lomography 35mm Film Scanner deck.
